Does fighting for your rights mean fighting for your life?

It seems like a pretty obvious question, to say the least. Online news is raving about the gay pride weekend, with hundreds of thousands, and more likely millions of supporters for the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community marching through America’s largest cities- NYC, Seattle, DC, LA, Chicago, Boston and home to the memory of Harvey Milk- San Francisco.

Countless assaults, hate crimes, and even murder has been committed in the past in the name of “decency;” yet still the 41st annual parade “filled downtown San Francisco with color, music and more than a little nudity” after the thrill in New York where same sex marriage was legalized not 2 days earlier.

I am proud to say that I support this country in reaching another milestone of progress on a social rights front. Even President Obama gave a speech during a high profile LGBT fundraiser on Thursday. However, through the festivities, he did not change his original stance on gay rights. Rather, he drifted into talk of federalism, the frustrations of democracy and the progress and setbacks of public debate. “Obama is, objectively, the most influential president LGBT citizens have ever had” and although he showed his support for the rights of the state to legalize same sex marriage, he did not endorse the idea of same sex marriage.

I can’t help but think that this is only a political buffer to prepare for his upcoming battle in the next presidential race. The hopes and lives of millions rest on the hope that with his reelection, he would take action in favor of the gay community in his second term, when he would have less pressure to maintain a specific image for yet another race.

I ask the public- where do you think we should be today in terms of gay rights? Do you support the choice of New York or are they mistaken in what they believe is progress?

Leave your 2 cents in the People’s Perspective above and share with the world what you think.

P.S.- t2owls brings up a good point- I’ll reword- Obama wouldn’t face less “opposition,” but just less pressure from his own party as well as others to please the general public (since he can’t run for a third term)
